How can our company improve our technical SEO: We provide our top 7 tips
So, you might be scratching your head thinking, what does technical SEO mean?
Technical SEO is all about making your website faster, improving the mobile design and ensuring that Google or, to be more exact, Google can crawl and index the website.
For example, Google allocates a finite crawl budget to your website. You do not want to waste that crawl budget by having Googlebot crawl and index, say, the WordPress login page every day.
Your really good SEO companies will create a site map setting out which pages Googlebot should index and which ones shouldn’t. You can, therefore, create a site map, which is like a long shopping list of pages, for Googlebot to either index or not index.
First things first, create a sitemap.
So, one of the first things you could do to improve your business’s technical SEO is to create a site map.
Now, you might think, how do I even begin to do that?
Well, it’s actually a piece of cake, especially if you have a WordPress CMS website, because there are actually free plugins. For example, Yoast offers a brilliant plugin called Yoast SEO for free.
So, in around 3 minutes, you could create a site map using Yoast and upload it to Google Search Console. When Googlebot needs to crawl and index your website again, it will have a list of all the pages and blog posts that you want indexed.
Remove duplicate content
So, duplicated text on your company website is a sure-fire way of damaging the organic SEO.
Google wants original, quality work that shows an original perspective. It wants, therefore, your business to publish original work that’s not duplicated.
Therefore, don’t duplicate text on your website, as this can damage your SEO.
Make sure that everything can get indexed.
This does follow on from our previous point, but sometimes Googlebot may struggle to index text within, say, an accordion.
So, your web designers and the SEO consultants you hire must ensure the text can be indexed.
Ensure you get a perfect mobile version of the design of your website.
So, you really need to design a top-quality mobile version of your company website. It needs to have a low bounce rate, be super simple to use, and be user-friendly.
Now, you must ensure that Googlebot can crawl and index the mobile version of your company website. That’s because Alphabet, that’s Google, has introduced Mobile First Indexing, meaning that Google will index the mobile version before it indexes the desktop version. So, your SEO company must ensure that all pages and blog posts designed on the mobile version can get indexed.
Opt for super-fast hosting.
So there’s hosting that’s as cheap as chips, a few quid a month. We recommend skipping that option and paying for your fast, ultra-quick hosting.
Because if you hold up a shopper for even a fraction of a second and the website is slow, then they will go somewhere else. Your global brands, your high-street names, you will notice that even during a period when there are millions of shoppers on their website, for say, the build-up to Christmas, their company websites are still super-sonic.
This is because they want to offer a good user experience and keep the company’s bounce rate as low as possible.
One way to do just that is to have a superfast website, for which you need superfast hosting.
Add schema mark-up
So, let’s say that you’re about to launch a brand new website for your coffee shop, which is based in Cardiff city centre.
Well, you should most definitely use Schema markup to mark up the NAP information on the website. So you can use Schema to mark up your company address, phone number, and name. This is a piece of cake to do.
Google’s Structured Data Markup Helper is
So, this is a super useful tool offered by Google. It will help you add structured data to your company website step by step.
The tool creates the HTML for you.
Another really useful use for schema is that it helps you create structured data, which can help your business stand out in the organic search results. For example, let’s say you retail a product, such as ski boots, and the product has a 5-out-of-5-star rating. By marking this up using schema mark-up, you increase Google’s use of that product rating as a featured snippet directly in the SERPs.
Make sure that your website is mobile-friendly
Google offers another really useful tool, the Google Mobile-Friendly Test tool, which basically offers recommendations on how to improve the mobile version of your company website.
Do use internal links
So internal links are super helpful for two reasons
So, internal links, for those that don’t know, are simply links that take you to another page but are on the same website.
From an SEO perspective, these are useful for two reasons. First, they can help spread link equity through different pages.
If you get a really good backlink from, say, the BBC or The Guardian Newspaper, then this is a good link that will send good-quality link juice to your domain name.
The page that it links to will move up Google’s ranks, but you can also use internal links, so some of that link equity or link juice moves through to those other pages as well, helping those pages to move up Google’s SERPs as well.
Write really good meta titles and meta descriptions
So make sure you also write excellent meta titles and meta descriptions, which will likely improve your business click-through rate. You can’t add much text to the meta title or description; you can only add a title and two lines of text.
However, the text you can write should persuade the shopper to click on your website, therefore improving your business’s click-through rate.
Last but not least, you must regularly check the quality of your website’s backlinks.
Spam and low-quality links can cause your website to become like a ship and sea that’s taking on water.
What do we mean by that?
Well, quite simply put, if your website—that’s your domain name—has a lot of spammy links, then Google can penalise your website. So you don’t want to build spam links; you want to build high-quality links.
