In the past
So, okay, to understand what’s going on, sometimes we have to look at the not to distant past.
Before businesses even knew about Google Gemini, ChatGPT and AI Overviews, well they were focused on where they rank in Google’s organic results.
Now, don’t get us wrong, this is still something that’s super important. Don’t neglect your SEO efforts and focus everything on GEO.
You don’t have to keep all your eggs in one basket, in matter of fact, as we mentioned right at the top, nail the organic SEO and your brand should keep getting mentioned in ChatGPT if you get a few things right.
No easy solution
Right before we jump into, in a lot more detail, here’s a bit of basic advice.
Since SEO was a thing, business owners all across the land have misunderstood it, thinking you do a few things on a Friday, then by the
Monday you will see an increase in sales.
It’s a slow process.
Hire the best, of the best, like us, and it’s still slow.
This is the same with GEO and optimising your website for ChatGPT.
The fact is the LLM’s and Google for that matter have hundreds, if not thousands of other businesses to choose from.
So why should they choose you?
And lets explore that, why should the LLM’s choose your business?
Google vs ChatGPT
You might think Google and ChatGPT are completely different, however, there both in reality trying to do the same thing. That is, supply
But they don’t, in fact, they’re both trying to do the same thing- supply a quality answer to a question.
One that is relevant, useful, going to supply that person with what they want to know.
Be the best
Okay, so this advice is cliché, however, if we were to tell you one giant nugget of advice, it would be this- be the best.
When it comes to content marketing, don’t write waffle that millions of businesses have already done. Be the best, write less, but answer that question so comprehensively, so mind-bogglingly well, people and the search engines, and the LLM’s want to cite your work.
Because, well it’s the best answer.
How do I even get my website mentioned on ChatGPT?
The best marketing boffins in the land think they know how the LLM’s work, however, here’s the facts.
Each LLM, such as Perplexity, Gemini or ChatGPT work differently.
So, it’s a developing area, no marketing agency knows how they all work.
Like with SEO it’s a bit of trial and error- however we do this:
– The advice you dispense needs to be of good quality
– Google EEAT framework is good guidance to follow
– Gaining authority helps everything, organic SEO and LLM visibility, so backlinks matter
– Un-structed brand mentions are gaining importance
– Write less, but write better work, don’t keep punching out articles for the sake of it
– Write for your audience, not to try and rank higher or be cited more
Be human, be helpful
You might have woken up with what you think is a winning solution, your going use the LLM’s to write your work, then they are bound to cite it?
No.
No, just don’t, here’s why, the LLM’s have knowledge on, well anything, but the advice they dispense is synthesised, it spat out in different and interesting ways to produce an answer.
Yet, its “synthetic”.
It’s like man-made fabrics; they can’t replicate the softness and comfort of wool made by a friendly sheep!
Therefore, LLM’s don’t know what craft beer tastes like, what its like to dance when you have had too many or what its like to order fast food the next day because your head is thumbing from too many vodkas the night before.
The LLMs only know, because us humans have supplied it with knowledge.
So, therefore, don’t reinvent, invent- be the author that dispenses real world knowledge.
Google couldn’t have spelt this out any more clearly with there Google EEAT guidance.
They want “expertise”, “experience”, “authoritativeness” and “trustworthiness”.
So, how can an LLM show real life experience, it can’t, so by writing helpful and relevant content written by a real human, well that’s the first part to getting this process right.
Authority is everything
Before you show up at a business meeting, your sometimes judged on the car you drive and the suit you wear- that’s just how it is.
People sometimes use this to work out, well how authoritative is this person? Are they worth listening to?
Well, Google use links, brand mentions and social media engagement to judge your work before it’s been written.
Because, in regards to SEO and GEO you need to supply the best answer, but you also need to be authoritative.
You need backlinks, and mentions and social media following. All must work together.
Page structure is super important think titles, H1-H6 etc
You can waffle until you blue in the face about something, but without good page structure it puts off the reader.
We all have something to do, wash the dishes, mow the lawn, and throw the rubbish out, we often haven’t got the time to wade through 3,000 words of solid text.
Page titles offer the winning solution, helping break up the text, helping you to split the text into manageable chunks.
Well, is great for the LLM’s and AI, as well as Google’s algorithm.
Why?
Because they better understand what you’re waffling on about as well.
It makes it simpler to extract an answer, slap it on Google AI Overviews answer if you written using an FAQ style of writing.
H1, followed by H2, the H3 should be used to mark-up the most important page titles, this gives the clearest signal to the LLM’s what that page is about.
For example, if all 3 titles are about waxes for a McLaren sports car, this helps the LLMs, such as ChatGPT understand the work.
Technical SEO is still super important
So, remember right at the top of the page, we said nail your organic SEO this will help improve your businesses visibility in the LLM’s- well
here’s what we mean.
You will need:
– Robot.txt
– Sitemap
– Make your website fast
– Sort out broken links, pages that no longer work
– Core web vitals, which just means make the design faster
– Make sure that the LLMS can crawl the work
What would you say is the most important thing that ChatGPT takes into account when mentioning businesses?
Well, obviously the information needs to be good.
Second to that is authority signals we believe, it just stands to reason, if you going as “what’s the best SEO company in the U.K”- well the businesses with best links, social media following and brands mentions will be cited.
However, the information dispensed has to be good, you have to be a “thought leader” in your business sector.
Why can’t I use AI platforms to write by content?
Because it’s not original.
How many other businesses will also be citing the same or similar work?
Lacks human experience, if your selling candles, only you that describe the lovely waft they leave in your room.
Only you can say how you drove or travelled all over the place to blend those oils together, to produce the best candle on planet earth.
The LLM’s are basically giving you an educated guess how a candle smells, because in reality a robot cant take a good whiff of your candle.
Why do you say use Google EEAT as your framework for optimising pages for the LLM’s?
Well, that’s simple.
ChatGPT is said to mostly use Bing for its answers.
However, there a lot of AI platforms, that use Google, so if you optimise your work for Google you get to improve your companies search engine optimisation, but also stand a chance of being mentioned by the LLMS.
Because, the LLMS use Google’s index to train itself, to gain knowledge, to basically scrape the information, understand it, then spit it out at you to give you an educated guess as to what “ear pods you should get for under £50.00”.
